How to Ensure a Space is Both Practical and Beautiful

The aesthetics of a space have a big impact on our health and well-being. For example, being surrounded by clutter can increase anxiety levels and impact sleep. It also makes us less productive. If you feel comfortable and relaxed in your home, it will boost your well-being. It’s a lot easier to spend time in a room where you feel relaxed, less anxious, and can breathe freely.

Living spaces can be both practical and beautiful. One does not need to be sacrificed for the other. In this article, we are going to look at how you can create a living space that ticks both boxes.

Decide What Needs Changing

If living space isn’t working for you, think about what needs changing. It could be any number of things.

  • Is there not enough natural light?
  • Do you need more storage capacity?
  • Is the furniture not working for you anymore?
  • Is the overall design aesthetic boring and uninspiring?
  • Is the design outdated?

The problem could be one or several of the above issues, or it could be something different. A luxury interior designer London will help you decide what needs changing, but there are things you can do on your own, too.

Open-Plan Living

Many modern homes have open-plan living spaces, but this can create problems. It’s very hard to control clutter when one room blends into another. It’s also difficult to create specific areas, such as a home working office if you’re your living space is open-plan.

Stylish Colour Palettes

Use colour to create a sense of cohesion while differentiating separate areas. Have one base colour and use this as your starting point. Choose different ones of that colour, along with complementary shades. For example, if you have a pale turquoise couch, you could paint a feature wall in deep turquoise, hang blue-grey drapes, and add pops of colour with lime green, magenta, or peach.

Use soft furnishings to bring the theme together, such as patterned rugs and textured throws. A large rug will delineate the living area, while a different but complementary colour could designate a work area.

Functional Furniture

Choose furniture because it’s functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Open shelving units are great for dividing different areas within a room. A cube storage unit placed between a work area and a seating area creates a divide while also providing useful storage for books and ornaments.

Folding screens do a similar job and can be moved around to suit your needs.

Consider adding built-in storage for a more minimalist look. This is something a good carpenter should be able to do for you.

Personalise the Space

Add personality with artwork and photographs. Original artwork really lifts a space, especially on a feature wall. You don’t need to splash out on a Picasso. Buy work you like from local art students; it could be the best investment you ever make.

Experiment with your living space. If you try a colour you end up hating, repaint the wall with a new one. Furniture can be changed out, as can soft furnishings. Have fun!
